The interior of the Knickerbocker Mansion is warm, cozy and historic. While the feeling is much more elegant than when the Knickerbocker family made it their home, it still has the original rustic charm and ambiance of days gone by. In its early years, the Mansion had five bedrooms and two baths on the second floor, but subsequent owners have carefully renovated these into four guest rooms, keeping the 1920 cedar wood paneling, so that each of the present rooms have full private baths accessible from inside the guest rooms. The third floor attic has been converted to a pinewood paneled, 700 sq. ft. luxury suite. Each of four dormers offers wonderful views in every direction, while a private exterior deck sits like a perch atop a tree, complete with private ground level access.
Through the front door and reception entrance lies the original living room, native rock fireplace and split log stairway. The ceiling and much of the walls are covered with wide wood paneling chosen by Bill Knickerbocker. A small, original dining room lies between the living room and kitchen and offers a secluded nook, with its own fireplace. The main dining room was converted from part of the first floor original exterior veranda and runs the length of the Mansion. It is a perfect place to lose yourself in a wonderful gourmet breakfast with views and to enjoy the antics of the Knickerbocker family of woodpeckers that reside in an old tree just outside the glass.
A full commercial kitchen is the creative workplace of Chef Robert Velasquez, Knickerbocker executive chef. Breakfast--always included with your stay--will be remembered long after you have returned home, and should never be missed! The restaurant, known as the "Bistro at the Mansion", displays the talent of Chef Robert, Friday and Saturday nights by reservation and luncheon on Sundays. It is, perhaps, the very best fine dining experience at Big Bear Lake!
"Bistro at the Mansion" is now open for Sunday lunch in addition to our regular Friday and Saturday evening fine dining menu. Come and enjoy a wonderful selection of imported beer and wine with a fantastic meal. Click the Knickerbocker Dining page for details.
